Hammock Attachment Point Installation for a Yogapeutics Aerial Yoga Hammock

PLEASE READ FIRST: All Yogapeutics hammocks come pre-assembled and ready to hang. The installation of the attachment point is the responsibility of the hammock owner, and Yogapeutics does not currently sell installation kits or hardware. My official recommendation is to hire a licensed contractor, professional aerial rigger or engineer to assist with hammock installation that is both safe and structurally secure.
I have created this resource page to give you a basic information as you determine and create your best attachment point installation for an aerial yoga hammock in your space.
The hammock owner is solely responsible for the attachment point installation security and safety. This information page is not intended as instructional, but rather as helpful resources for installing a hammock attachment point. All individuals involved in the making of this website will not accept responsibility for poor attachment point installation, faulty attachment points or injury to hammock user due to attachment point failure for any swing or aerial equipment.
I hope this resource page serves as a helpful starting point so that more kids will have access to such a wonderful mind/body practice as aerial yoga.

If you have the structure to support it, you could try using a ceiling plate mount similar to the one shown above, but for this, I highly recommend also having a swivel to decrease torque on the attachment point!
You can purchase ceiling plate mounts like this one on Amazon! Be sure you put it into an appropriate beam for holding human weight.

For Trees, outdoor pergolas or Exposed Beams (note: hammock fabric color will fade with direct sun exposure):
Use a safety-rated sling for use on trees, pergolas or over beams. If you decide to hang your hammock over a tree limb or structural beam, be sure to check the integrity and health of the tree or the structural stability of the beam. I like to recommend tree limbs from healthy trees with your chosen branch being 5 or more inches in diameter.
These slings are sold in different lengths so be sure you are ordering the length you need for your structure. Note there are different weight ratings for utilizing either the choker or the basket wrap.
Here's one example of a safety rated sling you can purchase on Amazon.

For a pre-fabricated kit, I highly recommend checking out this Ceiling Beam Swing Suspension Kit. It is one of the most reasonably priced kits given quality and ease. There are images and instructional videos to help you with the installation! Watch the video below to see the product. Please click here to be redirected to the purchase page.

For those looking to install hammocks in a clinic or a yoga studio: I highly recommend hiring a professional engineer to help determine a safe rigging strategy and to offer a letter of safety after rigging, especially if you are installing multiple hammocks for public use.
Additional suspension equipment options for DIY:
Steel Eye Bolt: I always like to use steel eyebolts with a closed eye and a "shoulder." The shoulder element better allows for angled forces (swinging and swaying) on the eye bolt as opposed to just in-line (straight downward) pulls. CLICK HERE to see an example of this type of eyebolt from WesTech Rigging. Note: WesTech Rigging offers eye bolts of all sizes, not just the one listed in this link. Please be sure to determine the thread size and length you need for your structure and drill bit before ordering.
|
Steel Lag Screw: These do not offer as much safety and security as a steel eye bolt as they can sometimes unscrew themselves as you swing in the hammock, but I am offering an example as a resource if this is your only option. If you do use a steel lag screw, I would highly recommend you use one with a fully closed eye and a "shoulder." Also, consider adding a swivel or rotational device (as sold in the Yogapeutics store or in recreational climbing stores in the rock climbing section) to decrease the force of the hammock on the attachment point. See example of a steel lag screw by CLICKING HERE.

Installation Equipment*
*The equipment listed on this page is only to serve as a suggestion and it may not work for your structure or your individual needs. It is the hammock owner's responsibility to choose the equipment that works best for your structural set-up and to install it safely and securely.
I personally wouldn't purchase hardware from a hardware store for hanging an aerial yoga hammock unless it has been safety rated for human weight. Therefore, I like to purchase all of my hardware from stores that intend the use of the rigging equipment for human weight.

Spacing and where to place your Hammock
The following recommendations are for hammock use with children:
Be sure to place your hammock in a space that is easily accessible to you and your child. The easier it is to access, the more your child will use it. While some families may initially resist the idea of having a hammock in a communal family space, you might consider it as a benefit because it will be easy to access and easy to supervise, and you can always remove it if you are hosting a gathering. Most customers place hammocks in a playroom, a family living space or a child's bedroom.
Space hammocks at least 4-6 feet from a wall. I recommend at least a 5-6 foot diameter of space around the hammock for pose use.
If you are purchasing more than one hammock, please space your hammocks at least 4-6 feet apart.

Rotation and Swivels for Aerial Yoga Hammocks

Rotational devices or Swivels are not necessary for Aerial Yoga Hammocks, but they do allow an additional spinning component to hammock use, and they also decrease the force placed on the attachment point.
Yogapeutics uses these swivels in our studio to allow versatility with hammock use, full movement in all planes, decreased twisting of hammock straps, smoothness with movement and extra fun! Most kids love how the swivel adds a sense of flow to movement in the hammock and allows a spinning component, but some kids can be overwhelmed by spinning. Hammock swivel packages (includes a swivel and a carabiner) can be added and built into your pre-assembled custom hammock or purchased once you get the hammock home and decide you'd like to add it on. See them in the Yogapeutics store by CLICKING HERE.
Please be mindful about your purchase if you intend to utilize a swivel on a hammock for children with over sensitivity to vestibular input (kids who get easily overwhelmed or quickly nauseated when spinning). Always allow the child complete control over hammock movement.
